# Can You Travel with Kratom? TSA, Road Trips & International Rules (2026)

**By Kratom Herbs** · 2025-06-10

## Can you fly with kratom? The quick answer

Can you fly with kratom? You can usually travel with natural kratom inside the U.S., as long as it's legal everywhere you're going, including stopovers. Ten states now ban it, four of them since March 2026, so a trip that was fine last year may not be today. Many countries ban kratom outright, so international travel is where most people get into trouble.

_This guide is general information, not legal advice. Laws change quickly; check the rules for every place on your route before you pack. Kratom is not approved by the FDA to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. For adults 21 and over only._

## Flying within the U.S.

TSA screens for security threats, not for kratom, but its normal rules for powders and liquids still apply. Local police at the airport enforce state law, so the state you fly into matters.

| | | |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you're packing | Carry-on | Checked bag |
| Powder, 12 oz or less | Allowed; may get a second look | Allowed |
| Powder, over 12 oz | May need extra screening and can be confiscated if it can't be cleared ([TSA](https://tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/what-policy-powders-are-they-allowed)) | Recommended by TSA |
| Capsules and gummies | Allowed | Allowed |
| Liquid kratom (shots, tinctures) | Only containers of 3.4 oz or less, in your quart-size liquids bag | Allowed |

Tips for a smooth trip:

- Keep products in their **original, labeled, sealed packaging**. Loose powder in an unmarked bag is what gets questioned.
- Pack **only what you need** for the trip.
- **Check your connections.** A layover in a state that bans kratom adds risk, especially if a flight change forces you to collect your bags there.
- If you're asked about it, stay calm and show the label.

## Driving across state lines

On a road trip, the law of every state you pass through applies, not just your start and end points. As of October 2026, kratom is banned in these 10 states:

**Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin.**

North Dakota also has a temporary ban, California prohibits selling it, and Ohio allows only natural leaf and plain powder (no extracts, shots or edibles). Some cities and counties ban it too, including San Diego, Sarasota County and Denver.

For dates and details on every state, see our [2026 kratom legal guide](https://kratomherbs.com/blogs/news/is-kratom-legal-in-your-state). If your route crosses a banned state, leave your kratom at home or plan a different route.

## Traveling internationally

Our advice is simple: don't take kratom abroad. Many countries treat it as a controlled drug, penalties can be severe, and customs officers won't care that it was legal where you bought it.

Countries widely reported to ban or tightly control kratom include:

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Region | Countries |
| Asia and Middle East | Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar, United Arab Emirates |
| Oceania | Australia (Schedule 9, the same class as heroin), New Zealand |
| Europe | United Kingdom (illegal to import or sell since 2016), Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Romania, Switzerland |

**Thailand** legalized kratom leaf in 2021, but concentrates remain illegal and sales are restricted, so it's not a free-for-all for visitors. [Source](https://www.apotheke-adhoc.de/nachrichten/detail/panorama/verbraucherzentrale-nrw-warnt-vor-kratom/)

This list isn't complete, and countries change their rules. Check with your destination's embassy before you go. Coming home, U.S. Customs can also seize kratom products, so don't plan to buy it abroad and bring it back.

## Packing checklist

- Check the law in every state or country on your route, including layovers
- Keep kratom in its original, sealed, labeled packaging
- Put powder over 12 oz and any liquids over 3.4 oz in your checked bag
- Bring only what you need for the trip
- Never pack 7-OH products: they are now federally illegal everywhere in the U.S.

## Frequently asked questions

**Will TSA take my kratom?** TSA's job is security screening, so natural kratom in labeled packaging usually isn't an issue. Large amounts of powder can be pulled for extra screening, and TSA can refer anything to local police.

**Can I fly into a state where kratom is banned?** You shouldn't bring kratom with you. Possession is illegal in those states, including at the airport.

**What about 7-OH tablets or shots?** Since August 25, 2026, concentrated and synthetic 7-OH products are Schedule I under federal law, so don't travel with them anywhere. Kratom Herbs has never sold them.

**Can I ship kratom to my hotel instead?** Only if kratom is legal where you're staying. We don't ship to states where it's banned. [Contact us](https://kratomherbs.com/pages/contact-page) with questions.
