What Yūgen Can Teach Us About The Universe

One of the noticeable things about aging is what it does to you. Not what it does to you physically, but what it does to you mentally and spiritually. Older people are quick to talk about the importance of reverence, to know your place and to revere the universe around us. This is perhaps most closely felt, a country that has a rich tradition of reverence and respect and which, perhaps not coincidentally, has one of the largest elderly populations in the world. It’s not surprising then that the word, “Yūgen,” is Japanese. But what is Yūgen, and what can it teach us about the universe?
